Higher Certificate in Computing Applications and Support

Programme Overview

This course will give you expertise in hardware, software applications, software development, operating systems and telecommunications. It will equip you with all the skills you need to pursue a career in the information and communications technology industry.

As a graduate of this course you will:

  • Understand the essentials of business and information technology.
  • Design and create fully functioning websites as well as multimedia applications.
  • Install and configure computer networks, software and hardware.
  • Have a detailed knowledge of the theory and practice of application development and support including the essentials of hardware, software, operating systems and networking.
  • Have an ability to act as a technical support person.

Course Structure and Award

This is a two year Higher Certificate. The course is run over 4 semesters with examinations at the end of each semester. On completion you will receive a HETAC Higher Certificate in Science in Computing in Applications and Support at Level 6 on the National Framework of Qualifications.

Career Prospects

There has been significant growth in information technology in Ireland and there is a current shortage of IT graduates. This course will equip you with the technical knowledge and business skills to build a successful career in information technology, specifically in a technical support role.

Further Study Options

This programme provides an ideal platform for future studies. Students who acheive an overall mark of 50% in year 2 of the Higher Certificate are eligible to gain entry into year 3 of honours degree programmes eg BSc (Hons) in Computing, BSc (Hons) in Business Information Systems and year 2 of the BA (Ord) in Management of Technology in Business.

Who is the Programme for?

The course is for school leavers, mature students and graduates of FETAC level 5/6 programmes.

Minimum Entry Requirements

Leaving Certificate students should apply under the CAO system. Minimum requirements are grade D3 (at Higher or Ordinary level) in five subjects of the Leaving Certificate Examination. A minimum of grade D3 must be obtained in English and Mathematics at either Higher or Ordinary level.
