Current Research Projects

Centre for Research and Innovation in Learning and Teaching (CRILT)

National E-Learning Laboratory (NELL): In our usability lab we undertake  usability and user experience testing and research. Since its opening January 2009 we have worked with a number of partners on a range of applications from on-line maths support programmes to testing of NALA's new e-learning literarcy resource.  Many of the smaller projects are funded through the Innovation Voucher Initiative from Enterprise Ireland. Towards the Integration of Transectorial IT Design and Evaluation (TWIN TIDE) Network:  (2009-2013). The aim of the COST Initiative is to reduce the fragmentation in European research investments and opening the European Research Area to cooperation worldwide.  This network will collaborate on research and share good practice in the areas of HCI, usability and user experience.  Funded through the ESF COST Initiative. NAIRTL Funded Project 2010-2011:  How do you Moodle?  Improving Students' Learning Experience of Virtual Learning Environments (VLE's) in Moodle. Contact Dr Stephan Weibelzahl and Abi Reynolds.

Motivation oriented Personalised e-LEARNing through PLAY:  IRCSET Embark Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme. This research looks at how motivation in gaming based e-learning can be measured, identifying factors that increase motivation with a focus on adaptive strategies for personalisation- based motivation in gaming based e-learning. Battery Power Aware Adaptive M-Learning System:  IRCSET Embark Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme. This project aims to design, test and validate adaptive strategies for assisting mobile learners in situations were their learning outcome is impacted by low battery conditions. Personalised m-Learning Environment for Mobile Devices with Multiple Wireless Connectivity. IRCSET Embark Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme. This project investigates means of providing learners with educational content that best suits their profile and access network while taking into account user budget constraints. School of Business

NCI President Seed Funded project 2010-2011:  The research examines the degree to which segregation exists in the investment management sub sector of the financial services industry in Ireland and the underlying reasons for these patterns.  It compares and analyses the experiences of men and women who work, or have worked, in the sector in order to identify the enablers and barriers they encountered in recruitment, progression and retention. NCI President Seed Funded Project 2010-2011: Employee fairness judgements in respect of termination of employment: A longitudinal Study. The research aims to explore the factors which impact upon an employee's fairness perception in relation to the termination of employment in an Irish context. School of Community Studies

Labour Market Training and Education programmes for the unemployed: research on student progressions’ (2010-2011). The School of Community Studies is currently undertaking a self-evaluation of its Progressions training programme for disadvantaged unemployed people.  This project is self-funded, though the research unit within the School of Community Studies is funded with the support of the Jesuit Community in Ireland. This is a collaborative project with Prof. Professor Mark Morgan of St. Patrick’s College Drumcondra. Contact Kacie Desmond, Tim Hamilton Research Fellow in Social Justice.
