Foundation Office

Welcome to the National College of Ireland Foundation.

The National College of Ireland is a not-for-profit, registered charity which receives less than 35% of its core funding from Government.

Our role in the Foundation is to work in partnership with alumni, friends and private and institutional benefactors to raise financial support to enable the National College of Ireland to fulfil its mission.

“Our mission is to widen participation in higher education and unlock each student’s potential. We offer students the opportunity to acquire the skills and self-confidence to change their lives, contribute to a knowledge based economy and become responsible, active citizens”.

Mission Statement, National College of Ireland 2007

Over 4,500 students attend National College of Ireland on a yearly basis – some come through the traditional CAO route, but many of our students are part-time. Some study in one of our 28 off-campus sites; others study in the workplace or on distance learning programmes.

Of these, over 600 or 13% are on either full-time or part-time access programmes.

With the extraordinary support of private individuals and institutions who share our view, we have raised in excess of €25M since 2000 to support capital development, campus- and community-based programmes, and research in our core areas of human resources, organisational change, information technology and technology enhanced learning.

Some of the projects these funds helped to provide include:

NCI's IFSC CampusA state of the art Docklands Campus in the heart of Dublin’s IFSC

The Early Learning Initiative

This is a community based intervention programme directed at children and their parents, which seeks to provide activities, training and support so that from birth, children are given a first class educational start and the opportunity to avail of ongoing support to reach their full potential. A major project, the ELI will run over 5 years from 2007 to 2011 inclusive, and is funded by a small number of generous donors. One of the early key interventions is the home visiting programme.

As the College embarks on its new 5-year strategic plan, opportunities now exist to partner with the College to support the following initiatives:

  • Widening participation in and promoting access to higher education through school- and community-based initiatives
  • Supporting Student Success through extra tuition, mentoring and support for access students
  • Dockland’s campus Campus Maintenance Programme
  • Funded Chairs in the School of Business and the School of Informatics
  • International student scholarships in Finance, Human Resource Management and Information Technology
  • Seed funding for the establishment of the Institute of Professional Practice in the Community and Voluntary Sector
  • Research fellowships in Organisation Change and Technology Enhanced Learning

Whether you are a National College of Ireland graduate, or from the world of business or philanthropy, your interest and support is warmly received. Donors can be recognised through naming opportunities, such as lecture rooms and other facilities, a programme or an academic appointment. National College of Ireland respects those donors who wish to remain anonymous. Every gift is welcome and financial gifts can be made in a tax-effective way.
