English Language Support Programmes

Since 2019, ELI has been developing support programmes for the growing number of students that are learning English as an Additional Language (EAL) in local secondary schools in the North-East inner city and Docklands.

English Speaking Sessions

English Speaking Sessions is a programme that aims to provide English as an Additional Language (EAL) learners in secondary school between the ages of 12-18 a safe and fun space in which to practice their conversational English. Sessions last for 1 hour and are facilitated by trained volunteers and supervised by ELI staff. Students focus on speaking about different topics each week with volunteers (e.g. The weekend, Holidays, the environment) in order to improve their linguistic self-confidence. The programme includes trips and excursions where students can practice their English in real-world settings.

Location:  O’Connell’s secondary school, Richmond St North, Dublin 1 D01 Y4A9

Days/Times: Mondays, Tuesdays or Thursdays, from 3.45-4.45pm

The programme is open to all students attending a school or living in the NEIC, with a level of spoken English between A2 and B1 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and students are grouped according to their speaking ability.
