Dean of School of Business

The Position:

Reporting to the Vice President Academic & Research; the Dean of School of Business will provide academic leadership for the School; in conjunction with the Vice Deans, he/she will effectively manage the School’s staff and will have overall accountability for the management of the School; he/she will develop and support income generation in the School and will ensure that the resources of the School are oriented towards the achievement of the College’s goals. The Dean of School of Business is also a member of the Executive Group of the college which has responsibility for the achievement of the College’s goals and objectives as well as policy and operational matters related to College activities.

Specific responsibilities:

·         Lead academic faculty in the development of the School's curriculum and its overall portfolio of provision

·         Develop research and scholarship opportunities within the School and provide leadership for knowledge transfer

·         Managing and oversight of international collaborations

·         Develop and support income generating activity within the School

·         Ensure that the School's links with the wider College community are appropriately supported and developed

·         Ensure that the performance of academic faculty and administrative staff within the School is appropriately managed and reviewed in line with College policies.

·         Ensure the effective deployment and development of academic faculty and administrative staff in pursuit of the School's objectives

·         Responsible for the quality of provision within the School including the implementation of quality processes related to learning, teaching and assessment, course approval and external examiners involvement

·         Ensure that the academic performance of the School is appropriately monitored and that related action plans are drawn up and implemented

·         Prepare, agree and effectively manage the School's budget in line with the requirements of the College

·         Contribute to the development of College strategy and strategic plans

·         Have an understanding of the key accreditation bodies associated with a progressive School of Business in order to work with the Vice President in seeking to obtain targeted accreditations

·         Lead, manage and oversee the day-to-day operations of the School

·         Ensure that the views of the students of the School are appropriately acted upon

·         Maintain and develop positive professional relationships with those professional bodies involved in accrediting the School’s provision

·         Work collaboratively with other internal Schools and Departments

·         Attend and contribute to Academic Council and Executive Group meetings



Candidate Profile:


It is expected that the successful candidate will have the following capabilities:

  • A minimum of  five years’ successful experience of providing academic leadership in higher education
  • A successful track record of managing academic staff
  • Excellent leadership ability
  • Evidence of success in innovation in learning, teaching and the curriculum
  • Clear understanding of the demands on a modern Business School (i.e. quality of provision, attractive and relevant portfolio, income generation and research)
  • Evidence of initiative and success in income generating activity
  • Good standing within own specialised academic field including evidence of publications
  • Ability to contribute to the development of strategy
  • Evidence of resource management
  • Commercial acumen
  • A willingness to travel

Terms and Conditions of position:

Contract Type:          Indefinite

Salary Band:              €90,450 - €120,600

Annual Leave:           34 days

Pension:                      Defined Contribution Pension Scheme
