Preparation Courses

English Language Support

NCI has a range of options and courses to support you, whether to bring you up to the required level to begin your studies or to help with English language skills during your studies.

English Language and Academic Skills Unit
At NCI we offer a range of English language support both before and during your studies. Our courses are specifically designed with international students in mind and the course content is focussed on academic language development.

English language courses

Our English language courses are designed for international students who meet our academic requirements but still need to acquire the correct level of English language to undertake a Higher Education course at NCI. As well as English language skills, the course will familiarise you with all aspects of studying and living in the Ireland including:

  • Understanding lectures and academic texts
  • Writing academic assignments
  • Presentation skills
  • Irish culture
  • Assessment preparation
  • Subject specific lectures (for selected subject areas)
  •  Social activities

Pre Masters  
For students joining our Postgraduate programmes, we offer Pre Masters courses. The overall IELTS score required for the two-semester course is 5.5 with a minimum score of 5.5 in writing and 6.0 in reading.  Students can progress to Masters programmes if they achieve a combined average mark of 60% for two Level 8 (Masters level) modules, which form an obligatory part of the assessment. Students must also achieve a combined average mark of 60% for two English language modules, which are completed over the two semesters of the Pre-Masters. If a student wishes to attempt to study the Pre-Masters over one semester, then they are required to take an IELTS test at the end of the semester. Upon successful achievement of the required level, they can progress to the Postgraduate programme.

English Language Academic Skills Programme (ELASP)
For Undergraduate students, we offer a two semester foundation programme. For applicants to the School of Business, the language entry requirements for ELASP include an overall IELTS score of 5.0, with a minimum score of 5.5 in reading  and 4.5 in writing.

For applicants to the School of Computing, the language entry requirements for ELASP include an overall IELTS score of 5.0, with a minimum score of 5.0 in reading and 4.5 in writing

Please Note:

  • *The first semester intake for Pre-Masters in September is suitable for applicants who wish to progress to a master’s course in the January intake. (Must take IELTS test to progress)
  • Applicants for 1 semester of the Pre-Masters must have a minimum overall IELTS of 6.0 with 6.0 in both the reading and writing bands.
  • The September intake runs over two semesters from September to May.
  • The January intake runs over two semesters from January to August.
