Research Interests

  • Throughout the past seven years Dr Maycock has been an active researcher in a number of domains. His primary focus has been in the area of Technology Enhanced Learning where he is particularly interested in the automatic creation of education content to suit the cognitive ability and pedagogic preference of a learner in real time. In addition, he is currently leading two data analytics projects: Perspective - The product is involved with the identification, classification and analysis of communication distributed across multiple digital channels, including: Twitter, Facebook, Amazon, Blogs, and News Channels, and is currently in an early prototype stage. Layola - Layola is a product that enables the collaborative construction of educational content  and scenarios across educational institutions, promoting discourse centered on best pedagogical practices. Layola creates semantic links between faculty members and recommends interconnections to enhance and facilitate discourse around best pedagogical  practices including shared resource locations  for practical components and knowledge discovery. Additionally Layola has integrated an automatic content analyser that enables authors of content to automatically create  metadata describing the educational content from a domain perspective and also the internal resources that will stimulate cognitive responses. Layola is currently being redeveloped after the six month beta test has concluded.

Recent Funding

  • Secured €5,000 Presidential seed fund to support participation in an analysis of learners engaging in a traditional lecturing environment against learners engaging in an automated environment, NCI, 2008.
  • Secured €75,000 IBM IRCSET application to pursue a PhD in Computer Science at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth, 2004, in collaboration with Dr. John G. Keating.
