Research Projects

Digital Knowledge Skills and Competencies of Irish Educators in Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) practice

The project aims to identify Irish ECEC educator needs, attitudes, competencies and capacity related to the use of digital technology in their practice so as to support Irish policy development in the use of digital technologies in ECEC.

The study will use a mixed-methods design to describe the current use of digital technology and Educators attitudes and perceived challenges and benefits of using digital technology in everyday ECEC practice. The results will be integrated to inform wider policy development in the area.

This project is funded by POBAL on behalf of Department Of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth (DCEDIY) under the Early Childhood Care and Education Programme.

Early Childhood Educator’s Digital competencies will be explored in six main areas

  1. Professional engagement uploading docs, communication etc.)
  2. Using Digital Resources (searching for information creating resources etc.)
  3. Pedagogic use with children (co-constructing digital stories, use of unplugged devices etc.)
  4. Assessment of children’s learning/development (making an assessment of children’s learning and development – developing portfolios etc.)
  5. Empowering children’s access and personalising digital use (using digital devices to support children’s inclusion)
  6. Facilitating children’s digital competence (safety and wellbeing, problem solving etc)
