Sustainability Day at NCI

On December 3rd, NCI hosted the very first Sustainability Day in the Mayor Square campus building.

At the event, live poster presentations highlighted NCI’s work in sustainability. These presentations were followed by an afternoon of skills sharing sessions alongside NCI’s annual Bring and Buy Sale in partnership with NCISU.

All proceeds from this year’s Bring and Buy Sale will be donated to Breakthrough Cancer Research

Breakthrough Cancer Research is an Irish medical research charity that focuses on cancer. By investing in crucial research, the work of Breakthrough Cancer Research aims to improve outcomes for those impacted by cancer, enhance quality of life, and save lives as research progresses and treatment options evolve.

At National College of Ireland, sustainability is not just a buzzword; it's a guiding principle that permeates every aspect of our institution. From our academic programmes to our campus operations, we prioritise sustainability to ensure a thriving future for generations to come.

In the lead up to Sustainability Day, the NCI community was invited to express interest in taking part. Faculty, staff, and students were given the opportunity to present on their sustainability projects or initiatives, and it was no surprise that the response was not just prompt, but enthusiastic as well.

Days such as this give everyone at NCI, staff, students, and faculty, along with friends, family, and community neighbours the chance to come together. The campus was busy and lively. While days like this showcase the warm atmosphere that NCI consistently strives to create, it is highly rewarding when these days also serve a good cause. Being aware of sustainability issues and knowing how we can make changes is so important, and as nights grow colder and the festive season approaches, the Bring and Buy Sale allows the NCI community to come together to help others. Every little step creates the bigger picture.

NCI’s Mayor Square campus building was buzzing as attendees enjoyed shopping at the Bring and Buy Sale, sustainability tips, and pancakes in the Atrium with our very own NCI honey! Creativity was in the air at the skills sharing stands in the Kelly Theatre. Everyone got into the festive spirit at the knitting and sewing circle, and the ‘make your own Christmas decorations’ stand was particularly popular. The day’s activities allowed NCI to highlight the College’s on campus sustainability initiatives, for example, the ‘Bike to Work’ promotion. Overall, the day was busy and lots of fun, and hopefully everybody went home with some new ideas about how to make sustainable choices more often.

Sustainability in Action

NCI has put sustainability at the very heart of our 5 Year Strategic Plan. The College aims to become one of the most sustainable third level institutions in the country and will align our teaching, research and campus to ensure sustainable practice across everything we do.

“We were excited to welcome the community to NCI for Sustainability Day 2025. Community engagement and education are essential to achieving our sustainability goals. This event not only highlights NCI’s own research and work in sustainability but also shares practical skills and ideas to empower the community to contribute through meaningful, everyday changes of their own.”

~ Frances Sheridan, Vice Dean for Undergraduate Programmes and Learning and Teaching at NCI’s School of Computing.

"Sustainability is integrated into research and curriculum at NCI, so it’s important to also raise general awareness, share our knowledge, and have a bit of fun raising some money for charity at the same time."

~ Professor Paul Stynes, Dean of NCI's School of Computing.
