Spring 2026 has been an exciting semester for NCI students in the School of Computing, taking full advantage of the opportunity to participate in the Laya x NCI Innovation Hackathon with a focus on AI for Sustainable Healthcare.
Students were briefed by Laya on real-world scenarios and worked to develop practical AI-enabled solutions, receiving academic support from NCI and industry guidance and subject matter expertise from Laya professionals.
On 17th February 2026, 36 students were selected into seven teams. Three internal mentoring sessions were held on 23rd, 25th February and 11th March 2026 provided feedback and guidance. After final preparation on 25th March 2026, the challenge concluded on 1 April 2026 with presentations showcasing innovative AI-driven healthcare solutions. Projects developed during this initiative included automated call summaries and fraud prevention tools, alongside industry trends and networking.
Dr Anu Sahni, Programme Director at NCI, said:
“At NCI, we want to give our students real-world exposure to industry so that, as well as cutting edge technological skills, they also understand feasibility, reading a brief and presenting a solution, essential skills for an ICT professional to be able to work in the real world beyond academic theory. I am grateful to Laya for this opportunity, very proud of how well our students have done, and delighted for the careers opportunity this has opened up for this cohort.”
Caroline Kennedy, Head of Career Development & Employability at NCI, added:
“Over the years we have developed strong relationships with Laya, as they have come on site speaking to our final year students and offering great practical support and advice. This initiative went that additional step, showing their investment in the next generation and an innovative approach to future-proofing and recruitment. It has been a real collaboration between Careers, School of Computing and Laya, which has been a great success thanks to the commitment and brilliance of ours students.
Out of 7 projects, 2 will continue to gain work experience with Laya while completing their studies, affording them the opportunity to build portfolio-ready projects invaluable as they continue to pursue their career goals.
Sudeep Aryan Gaddameedi, a student of MSc in Artificial Intelligence, has been awarded a paid internship with Laya: “I can’t wait to take up this position with Laya, I am thrilled! The whole experience, from real employer brief through supported project prep was brilliant, but for my work to be recognised with this appointment is really special. I’d like to thank Caroline and Anu for this incredible opportunity – thank you NCI!”
