Supports available to those impacted by image-based sexual abuse

In response to reports of a server containing thousands of images of women, shared without consent, National College of Ireland and NCISU issue this joint statement.

NCI unequivocally stands against any form of harassment and abuse. Free supports for those who have been impacted by recent image-based sexual abuse can be accessed through:

Sexual and gender-based violence, sexual assault and gender-based harassment have no place in our society and NCI is resolutely committed to creating safe places for those who access our services, and to supporting our staff and students. We support the Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee TD, in her progression of the Harassment, Harmful Communications and Related Offences Bill.

Some of you may be hearing the phrase ‘image-based sexual abuse’ for the first time and may be more familiar with the slang term ‘revenge porn’. This term gives the impression that the people whose images were shared without their consent may have done something to deserve ‘revenge’; there is never an acceptable reason to sexually abuse someone. We urge you to choose supportive and compassionate language.
