Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background

My name is Raj Bharath Murali, and I am currently working as an Azure Cloud Engineer in Dublin. Before coming to Ireland, I built over seven years of experience in cloud computing and cybersecurity, working with organisations across different industries. Having established my career in the technology sector, I wanted to deepen my expertise, gain international exposure, and accelerate my professional growth. This motivated me to pursue an MSc in Cyber Security at National College of Ireland. Studying at NCI helped me enhance my technical skills, understand the Irish job market, and successfully transition into my current role in Ireland.

What has been the most challenging part of your graduate journey?

The most challenging part of my graduate journey was balancing my MSc studies with preparing for the next stage of my career. While completing coursework and assignments, I was also working towards industry certifications, building my professional network, and preparing for interviews in the Irish job market. Coming from a professional background in cybersecurity, I wanted to ensure that I remained competitive and up to date with the latest cloud security technologies. Managing these commitments alongside the demands of a master's programme required strong time management and discipline. Looking back, the experience taught me how to prioritise effectively, stay focused under pressure, and remain committed to my long-term goals.

What are your Top 3 tips for current students and graduates who are looking to enter the job market in Ireland?

  1. Build your professional network early. Attend industry events, engage with professionals on LinkedIn, participate in career fairs, and connect with alumni. Many opportunities arise through networking and referrals.
  2. Gain practical experience alongside your studies. Employers value hands-on skills. Work on projects, pursue certifications, contribute to open source initiatives, or take part in internships that demonstrate your capabilities beyond academic achievements.
  3. Stay persistent and keep learning. The job search process can be challenging, especially for international students. Don't be discouraged by rejections. Continuously improve your CV, interview skills, and technical knowledge. Every application and interview is a learning opportunity.

What is a typical day like in your current role?

No two days are exactly the same, which is one of the things I enjoy most about my role. As an Azure Cloud Engineer specialising in cloud security, my day typically involves helping organisations strengthen their security posture across Microsoft 365 and Azure environments. This can include designing and implementing security solutions, conducting security assessments, reviewing compliance requirements, investigating security alerts, and working with clients to address potential risks. I also spend time exploring new Microsoft security capabilities and AI-driven security tools to ensure that the solutions we deliver remain effective against evolving threats. A significant part of my role involves collaborating with clients and technical teams to develop secure, scalable, and practical solutions that align with business objectives.

What do you like most about working in your current role or profession?

What I enjoy most about my role is the opportunity to solve real business problems through technology and security. Every organisation is different, and I enjoy working closely with clients to understand their challenges and design solutions that genuinely make a difference. One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is seeing the impact of what we implement. Whether it's helping a company strengthen its security, protect sensitive data, or confidently adopt new technologies, it's satisfying to know that the work contributes to something meaningful. I also enjoy the fact that there is always something new to learn. The technology landscape changes rapidly, especially with the growth of cloud computing and AI, which keeps the work interesting and continually pushes me to develop new skills.

What made you choose Ireland as a place you wanted to work?

I chose Ireland because I wanted to challenge myself both professionally and personally. After spending several years building my career in cloud and cybersecurity, I felt it was the right time to gain international exposure and experience a different technology landscape. Ireland's strong technology ecosystem, combined with the presence of many global organisations, made it an attractive destination for someone working in cybersecurity. It offered the opportunity to learn, grow, and work on projects at a global scale. At the same time, pursuing an MSc in Cyber Security at NCI gave me the chance to strengthen my technical knowledge while building a professional network in Ireland. Moving to a new country and starting a new chapter was not an easy decision, but looking back, it has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. "Every expert was once a beginner. Stay curious, keep learning, and trust that consistent effort will take you further than you think."
