Sourav is a class of 2022 MSc Data Analytics graduate from NCI. Starting as a Junior Data Analyst at Go-Ahead Ireland, he now leads the data analytics team, focusing on turning raw data into actionable insights and building innovative solutions that drive business efficiency.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background:
I moved from India to Dublin in 2021 to pursue a Master’s in Data Analytics at NCI. Shortly
after, I joined Go-Ahead Ireland as a Junior Data Analyst and have since progressed to leading
the data analytics team. My professional focus is on transforming raw data into accountable
insights that support informed business decisions, with a particular interest in developing
innovative approaches to problem-solving while making the most of available resources.
Outside of work, I enjoy hiking and exploring new places.
What was your most memorable experience from your time at NCI?
One of my most memorable experiences at NCI was serving as both a Peer Mentor with the International Office and a Lab Assistant. Guiding new students through the challenges of settling into Dublin during COVID-19 and helping them discover Irish culture was deeply rewarding. At the same time, supporting professors and classmates with subject-related queries sharpened my own technical and communication skills. These experiences not only helped me connect with people across the college community but also shaped how I approach leadership and collaboration today.
How did you hear about your role?
After completing my dissertation, I discovered the role on Indeed while exploring opportunities aligned with my career goals. I refined my CV to highlight relevant skills and applied directly. The position stood out as an ideal starting point, and I was confident it aligned well with my aspirations and the strong foundation I built at NCI.
What did the recruitment and selection process involve and how did you prepare for it?
After receiving an email confirming that I had been shortlisted, I was invited to a video interview with the Manager. This was followed by an in-person technical test focused on their current tech stack, and finally, a behavioral interview with the Operations Director. Shortly after, I received a positive response confirming my selection.
To prepare effectively, I thoroughly researched the company to gain an understanding of their operations, tools, and technologies. I also refreshed and sharpened my technical skills, which enabled me to complete the test ahead of time.
If you were an international student please describe the visa process you underwent:
I initially entered Ireland on a Stamp 2 student visa and transitioned to a Stamp 1G after graduation to begin applying for jobs. After securing a role with Go-Ahead Ireland and completing a year with the company, I was offered sponsorship for a Critical Skills Employment Permit.
What is a typical day like in your current role?
A typical day begins with planning tasks for both myself and my team, followed by reviewing emails for system alerts, data requests, or urgent issues. I then focus on resolving any blockers to ensure projects progress smoothly. We also hold a weekly team catch-up to align on priorities and updates.
The majority of my work involves developing dashboards, automating workflows, and building custom applications to streamline operations. Around 20% of my time is spent in meetings, with the remainder dedicated to data analysis and research and development. One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is seeing the solutions I build approved and successfully implemented across the company.
What do you like most about working in your current role or profession?
What I enjoy most is solving complex problems for stakeholders and creating solutions that drive efficiency, often saving countless hours of manual work. As a Lead Data Analyst, I take pride in developing systems that not only optimize operations and boost productivity but also promote innovation and knowledge sharing. I have built tools, dashboards, and internal guides that empower my team, enhance decision-making, and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement.
What has been the most challenging part of your graduate journey?
Navigating the unpredictable nature of job applications, interviews, and waiting periods was emotionally challenging. Staying resilient and patient throughout the process proved essential. At the same time, I had to continuously upskill and keep my knowledge current, which required strong time management and self-motivation.
The toughest part of my journey was coping with rejections. However, I learned to view setbacks as opportunities for growth and refused to let them demotivate me.
What has been the most challenging part of your graduate journey?
Don’t get discouraged by rejections — they are a natural part of the job search process. Stay persistent and keep applying consistently.
Don’t worry about landing your “dream job” right away. Focus on getting your foot in the door, gaining experience, and demonstrating your value in the Irish job market. The right opportunities will follow.
Continuously learn and stay curious. Research companies, upskill in relevant tools, and connect with industry professionals or managers on LinkedIn to gain insights into what employers truly value.
