Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background:
My name is Thomas Athikalam, and I’m originally from India. Before moving to Ireland, I worked at PwC India as a Senior Analyst in the International Tax – Global Mobility Services team. I then relocated to Dublin to pursue a Master’s in Management at the National College of Ireland.
After graduating, I joined AIB as an Operations Specialist, where I worked for 9 months. I then moved to Bank of America, where I currently serve as an Assistant Vice President in the Client Asset Oversight team.
What made you choose Ireland as a place to study and work?
Ireland appealed to me because of its strong presence in the financial services sector and its role as a European hub for many multinational companies. It is also an English-speaking country, which made settling in much easier. In addition, the graduate visa pathway for international students and the welcoming, multicultural environment made it an ideal place to both study and build a career.
What do you enjoy most about your current role?
What I enjoy most is the opportunity to solve complex issues, learn continuously, and interact with stakeholders across multiple jurisdictions. The nature of the work challenges me to stay engaged, think critically, and collaborate with professionals from different backgrounds — all of which make the role both dynamic and rewarding
What did the recruitment process involve and how did you prepare for it ?
The recruitment process involved submitting an application, followed by interviews with HR and relevant business teams. The interviews also included scenario-based questions aimed at evaluating decision-making and problem-solving skills, particularly in the context of operational challenges.
To prepare, I did multiple mock interviews to strengthen my communication and confidence. I also ensured that my CV was tailored specifically for each role, highlighting the skills and experience most relevant to the job description.
Can you describe the visa process you underwent ?
After completing my Master’s at NCI, I began working at AIB under the Stamp 1G Graduate Visa, which allows full-time employment for international graduates. When I moved to Bank of America, I continued under Stamp 1G, and the company later supported my application for a Stamp 1 Employment Permit. After meeting the required criteria, I successfully transitioned to Stamp 4, which offers more flexible work and residency rights in Ireland.
What is a typical day like in your current role?
In my role as Assistant Vice President in the Client Asset Oversight team at Bank of America, I am responsible for ensuring that client assets are properly segregated, protected, and monitored across multiple business lines, including prime brokerage, equity derivatives, and other OTC products. My day typically involves reviewing controls, working with internal teams, resolving operational issues, and supporting compliance with applicable standards.
How did you hear about your role ?
I joined AIB shortly after graduation and worked there for 9 months. I discovered the opportunity through a LinkedIn job posting and applied directly. Later, I found my current role at Bank of America in a similar way — through LinkedIn. The platform was instrumental in helping me explore available roles and apply efficiently.
What was your most memorable experience from your time at NCI?
My most memorable experience at NCI was being involved with the International Department and serving as a peer mentor. This gave me the opportunity to support new international students, help organize events, and connect with alumni and peers from various backgrounds. It was a rewarding way to contribute to the student community while also developing leadership and communication skills.
