Online Events for Autistic Students

AsIAm, Ireland's National Autism Charity, will host a range of online events to support autistic students.

AsIAm regularly host webinars, workshops and support sessions for autistic students. These events offer a safe and supportive space for students to ask questions about their college experience or to discuss any concerns they may have, seek advice and gain valuable insights from peers.

Upcoming Workshops

  • Supporting Autistic Students in Higher Education, 12pm-1pm, 4th & 11th November 

    AsIAm are hosting 2 online training sessions for all staff who work with autistic students in Higher Education. 

    The aim of the workshop is to give university staff more confidence in working with their autistic students. The confidence gained will enhance their support further for their autistic students benefitting the student's mental health.

  • Student Self Advocacy Group, 12pm-1pm, 5th, 12th & 19th November 

    AsIAm are excited to introduce the Student Self-Advocacy Group. This online group aims to connect autistic students with each other, providing a safe and supportive space to discuss self advocacy to support your journey through university.

Advocating for Yourself at College

This webinar was for all autistic students in college. 

This one-hour webinar focused on how autistic students can advocate for their rights and needs within higher education. It was led by Jennifer O'Connor, AsIAm's Adult Support and Wellbeing Officer. 

What was covered: 

  • Advocating of Your Self at college 
  • Speaking to you lecturers about your diagnosis or identity
  • Identifying your strengths in college 
  • Self- care and recognising one’s limits

Student Career Workshops

Student Career Workshops

Are you an autistic student in 3rd or 4th year at college? We understand that thinking about and moving into work can be challenging, which is why we are excited to introduce the Student Career Workshops with Niamh Greenan, AsIAm’s Employment Officer. This series of online Student Career Workshops aimed to provide autistic students with the tools and learnings to enter the work force. It provided a safe and supportive space for students to ask questions about their own employment journey after college. 

Who was it for? The Student Career Workshops was specifically designed for autistic adults who are navigating finding employment after college. It was aimed at students who are in 3rd or 4th year. Attendees did not need a formal diagnosis to register for the workshops. 

What to Expect? You can expect a supportive environment where you can seek advice, and gain valuable insights about your journey into employment after college. Some of the topics that were discussed included: Identifying areas of work/Cover Letters/CV’s/Application Forms and Interview Skills/Disclosure. 

When and Where? The group met weekly for 4 weeks on Zoom. The sessions took place on the 1st of November/8th of November/15th November/22nd November.

Student Transitions Peer Support Group

Student Transitions Peer Support Group

If you are you an autistic student starting college/further education, we understand that transitions can be challenging, which is why we introduced the Student Transitions Peer Support Group. This online support group aimed to connect autistic students with each other, providing a safe and supportive space to discuss concerns and share experiences. 

Who is it for? The Student Transitions Peer Support Group is specifically designed for autistic adults who are navigating through a time of change. This group is for students who have started at any college, PLC course or university in Ireland in 2023. This group is here to lend you a helping hand. 

When and Where? The group meets biweekly on Thursday evenings, with the first session scheduled for 26th of October 2023 at 6-7pm. Thanks to the power of technology, we gather online via Zoom, allowing participants from all across Ireland to connect and engage. The dates of the sessions are: 26th October/9th November/ 23rd November/ 7th of December. All sessions are 6-7pm. 

What to Expect? During the Transitions Peer Support Group sessions, you have the opportunity to meet other autistic students who share similar experiences and challenges. Led by compassionate facilitators, the group encourages open and non-judgmental conversations. You can expect a supportive environment where you can freely express your concerns, seek advice, and gain valuable insights from peers who understand your journey.

Supporting Autistic Students Workshop

Supporting Autistic Students, 12pm-1pm, 22nd October 2024
AsIAm hosted an online training session for therapists who work with autistic students in Higher education.

The workshop provided an explanation of Neurodiversity. It will then investigate aspects of Autism. The Therapeutic Relationship between Therapist and the Autistic Student was explored.

Finally, the Supportive Therapeutic Tools for Autistic Students was provided.

The aim of the online workshop was to give the Therapist an overview of Autism, and to gain more confidence in working in the exciting field of Neurodiversity.
