Parents Together Community Course – A Parenting course
The Parents Together Community Course is a 6 week course that aims to support parents to:
- Encourage children's learning
- Reduce behavioural problems
- Promote children’s self-esteem
- Fostering and maintain good parent-child relationships.
The Parents Together Community Course is a six week programme. The structure of the programme is that parents meet in a community setting on a weekly basis for two hours in a group led by two trained facilitators. Each week two topics are introduced, one positive parenting topic and one positive discipline topic. For example, in week 1 the positive parenting topic is “tuning into your children” and the positive behaviour topic is “pressing the pause button”.
Each weekly session starts with a “review of the week” where each parent gets an opportunity to talk about how they got on at home trying out the new learning. The discussion is parent focused and strengths based. DVD footage of real parenting scenes and parent-child interactions are used to illustrate new learning points and to stimulate discussion in the group.
This programme was produced in partnership between the Early Learning Initiative, National College of Ireland and the Parents Plus Charity, Mater Hospital, and is based on the highly successful Parent Plus Early Years Programme.
It is possible to become an accredited Parents Together facilitator by training and following the Parents Plus accreditation process. ELI is currently facilitating a Peer Support group for facilitators who have already trained in, and who are delivering, the Parents Together Community Course.
Parent Together Community Courses run in the Docklands for local parents throughout the year. Parents Together Facilitator Training takes place in the National College of Ireland every April.
