About Lisa
Lisa Farrelly's educational journey at National College of Ireland began in 2021 when she was invited to participate in a pilot programme comprising two QQI Level 6 modules in Music, Movement, Art and Drama and Core Pedagogies and Curriculum in Home Visiting.
Inspired by the experience, Lisa continued her studies and completed the Certificate in Leadership, Governance and Change Management in Early Childhood in 2023. She then progressed to the BA (Hons) in Early Childhood Education and Care, where she is currently in her final year.
Throughout her journey, Lisa has balanced work, family life and study, embracing the opportunities that lifelong learning can create.
Returning to Education
Returning to education as a mature student was a significant decision for Lisa and one that has brought a great sense of pride to her family. She sees education not only as a personal achievement, but also as an opportunity to be a positive role model for her children.
"I hope to demonstrate that, with determination and hard work, anything is possible regardless of the stage of life at which you begin."
A key part of her experience has been the support she received from lecturers who understood the unique challenges and opportunities that come with returning to education later in life. Their encouragement, guidance and commitment to student success helped build her confidence as a learner and enabled her to thrive academically.
For Lisa, the experience reinforced the value of lifelong learning and demonstrated that education remains accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds.
Creating Impact Through Learning
Lisa's studies have had a significant impact on her professional development. During her first year, she was given the opportunity to be mentored by Michelle Moore, National Home Visiting Manager. Following several months of mentorship, she was promoted to the role of ParentChild+ National Support Coordinator, a position she continues to hold today.
She believes that continuing her education and developing new skills played an important role in helping her reach this milestone. The confidence she gained through learning has enabled her to engage in public speaking, advocate for children and families experiencing socio-economic disadvantage, and champion the work of Home Visitors who provide vital support within communities.
"The knowledge, skills and confidence gained through learning can empower individuals to amplify not only their own voice, but also the voices of those they serve."
Lisa says she would encourage anyone working in the non-profit sector to consider returning to education. She acknolwedges that education provides the tools to advocate for people who may otherwise go unseen or unheard and can create meaningful change within communities.
Reflecting on NCI's 75th anniversary, Lisa believes the College represents opportunity, lifelong learning and access to education for people of all ages and backgrounds. The College is commited to equality, diversity and inclusion and to creating pathways that empower individuals to achieve their potential and make a positive difference in their communities.
