About Seán

Seán Buckley is a graduate of National College of Ireland's Diploma in Management and Employee Relations programme and has built a distinguished career in financial services spanning more than three decades. During that time, he has held a wide range of leadership positions across retail banking, lending and customer operations.

In 2024, Seán was appointed Director for Area East at Bank of Ireland, a role in which he oversees 54 branches and outlets across Dublin, Kildare and Wicklow, supporting more than 480 colleagues. The appointment followed a series of senior leadership positions within the bank, including Head of Mortgage Originations and Head of Customer Operations.

Seán says he feels privileged to serve as an Area Director with Bank of Ireland, leading teams that help customers, families, and communities achieve their ambitions through a large branch network. While he is grateful for the opportunities and roles that have shaped his career, his greatest fulfilment comes from helping others grow, realise their potential, and succeed.

"There is something truly inspiring about being part of a team that plays a meaningful role in supporting the life goals, aspirations, and financial wellbeing of millions of customers every day—it’s a responsibility and a purpose that I truly enjoy, and has stayed with me my entire career."

A Commitment to Lifelong Learning

Seán reflects on how his time at NCI taught him that learning is about much more than textbooks. He was inspired by lecturers who brought their own experiences from Consumer Affairs and Industrial Relations into the classroom, making theory feel real and relevant. They showed him how education could open doors and helped spark a mindset of continuous learning that has stayed with him throughout his career.

When asked if he had any advice for today's students, Seán emphasised the importance of staying curious, embracing opportunities, and not worrying if you don't have everything figured out. Careers rarely follow a straight line.

"The biggest opportunities in my career often came from stepping outside my comfort zone and saying yes to new challenges. Keep learning, build strong relationships, and believe in your potential. You may be surprised where the journey takes you."

As National College of Ireland celebrates 75 years of educating and empowering learners, Seán's career reflects the impact that management and employee relations education can have in supporting leadership development and career progression across Ireland's financial services sector.
