Devaraj is a class of 2022 MSc Cloud Computing graduate from NCI. Before completing the MSc in NCI he worked with Pheme Software and IBM in India as a Senior System Engineer and is now working as a Lead Software Engineer at Fiserv.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background:
I am a software engineer with over 10 years of experience in designing and delivering innovative software solutions. My expertise spans full-stack development, particularly in backend technologies such as Java, Spring Boot, and cloud platforms like AWS and Azure. I hold a Master’s in Cloud Computing from the National College of Ireland and have a passion for leveraging technology to drive innovation in financial services.
What made you choose Ireland as a place to study and work?
I chose Ireland due to its vibrant tech ecosystem and the presence of numerous multinational companies, particularly in the financial services sector. The opportunity to work in a culturally rich environment while contributing to innovative projects was very appealing.
What was your most memorable experience from your time at NCI?
One of my most memorable experiences at NCI was working on my project on the basics of databases in the banking domain. It not only allowed me to share knowledge but also deepened my understanding of the subject and its applications in real-world scenarios.
How did you hear about your role?
I learned about my current role through a recruitment agency, which connected me with the opportunity at Fiserv. The position aligned perfectly with my skills and background, motivating me to pursue it
What did the recruitment and selection process involve and how did you prepare for it?
The recruitment process included multiple interviews where I showcased my technical skills and problem-solving abilities. I prepared by thoroughly researching Fiserv, practicing coding challenges, and reviewing my past projects to demonstrate my experience.
Can you describe the visa process you underwent ?
I initially applied for the Critical Skills visa, which allowed me to work in my field seamlessly. Since starting my role, I've gained valuable insights into the local work culture, which has been essential in my professional journey.
What is a typical day like in your current role ?
A typical day as a Lead Software Engineer at Fiserv involves leading development efforts on various projects, collaborating with Scrum teams, and mentoring junior developers. I also focus on designing and implementing REST APIs and ensuring the quality of our software solutions.
What do you like most about working in your current role or profession?
What I love most about my current role is the opportunity to drive innovation and influence the software development process. It is rewarding to see how our work impacts the customer experience and contributes to the evolution of financial services.
What has been the most challenging part of your graduate journey?
The most challenging part of my graduate journey has been adapting to the fast-paced nature of the tech industry and keeping up with the rapid advancements in technology. However, this challenge has also motivated me to cultivate a strong commitment to continuous learning and professional growth.
