Purpose of Position:

To deliver the Early Learning Initiative’s Doodle Den Programme

The Early Learning Initiative is seeking to recruit primary school teachers or someone with a background in Early years education/Community Work/Social care to fill a part time (5.5 hours per week) position for an afterschool literacy programme for Senior Infants in Dublin’s inner-city area. Doodle Den aims to improve children’s overall literacy skills. The programme is run 3 times a week in various sites in Dublin’s inner city from Mondays – Thursdays, for 1.5 hours between the hours of 1:30pm and 4:15pm, depending on the site.

Key Responsibilities:

There will be two facilitators co-facilitating the literacy programme in each site. The role of both facilitators is to provide the children with opportunities to develop their literacy in a fun and relaxed way. Each facilitator is responsible for: 

  • Co-facilitating all the sessions of the literacy programme and ensuring fidelity of service delivery to the Doodle Den manual 
  • Taking the lead in parts of each session 
  • Organising the learning environment and materials as per the manual 
  • Coordinating assessment of participants involved
  • Planning and involving volunteers in the programme
  • Ensuring the provision of one healthy snack daily 
  • Planning and implementing family days 
  • Co-facilitating the parent component of the programme which comprises of at least six sessions, with a maximum of twelves sessions, over the programme year to facilitate all parents to attend sessions 
  • Contacting parents and engaging with parents to achieve the aims of the service, including follow-up with non-attendees 
  • To follow up non-attendance of participants and identify any supports required for participants to attend 
  • Attending supervisions and team meetings 
  • Working with children according to best practice in a child-centred way 
  • Being vigilant in monitoring and responding to incidents of non-accidental injury, suspected child abuse, or developmental delay in line with ‘Children’s First’, the National Child Protection Guidelines 
  • Liaising with, and making referrals to, other agencies and groups 
  • Actively participating in the monthly ELI Learning Community for Doodle Den 
  • Negotiating, liaising and supporting the ELI evaluation process 
  •  Any other duties as assigned by the Doodle Den Coordinator and Director of ELI

Skills and Experience Required: 

  • Relevant qualification in early childcare and education
  • A minimum of two years’ experience of working with children and families in education.
  • Experience in working with five and six-year-old children
  • Ability to deal effectively with a wide range of college personnel, community stakeholders and other outside individuals/organisations  
  • Proven capacity to work independently and as part of a team in a cross disciplinary, integrated team, sharing roles and responsibilities  
  • Ability to keep records and appropriate documentation.
  • Experience engaging with parents.
  • Good time management, administrative and organisational skills  
  • Excellent behaviour management skills 
  • An interest in literacy as demonstrated by being a member of literacy organisation or by having attended training/course outside of in-service training related to literacy is also preferred.

Positions available: 

4 posts available.  At least 2 positions must be a filled by a fully qualified primary school teacher 

Salary: 

33.25 per hour (facilitation rate); €12.79 for additional training, admin, meetings 

Annual Leave: 

24 days per annum

Contract: 

Fixed-term part-time – subject to ongoing funding  

Hours:                   

4.5 contact hours per week, plus one hour for preparation, recordkeeping, supervision, team meetings and evaluation requirements. Ideally, facilitators need to be available from 1.30pm from Monday – Thursday.  

Annual Leave:

8% of hours worked 

The successful applicant will be subject to Garda Vetting and must not have any convictions under the Sex Offenders Act 2001.

Shortlisting
