David Ochieng, Grants Finance Officer at NCI
International Men's Day, November 19th, 2025
Shining a light on the men of NCI.
My name is David Ochieng, and I am the Grants Finance Officer at NCI. I have worked at the College for eleven years.
My path to NCI
I studied accountancy and had over nine years' experience working in practice, corporate, and charity organisations before joining NCI in October 2014 as an Accounts Assistant.
Aspirations and motivations
Over time, my aspirations have evolved. Today, I find greater meaning in connection, empathy, and contribution. I aspire to make a positive impact - not only through my work, but also by fostering an environment where openness, understanding, and respect are valued. I believe that true strength lies in compassion, and that leadership means uplifting others, especially those who may be walking similar paths.
As someone who bridges two continents and cultures, I also aspire to give back by mentoring, sharing experiences, and helping others navigate the balance between heritage and new beginnings. It is a privilege to be part of a diverse, global community where different perspectives enrich how we live and work together.
Ultimately, my goal is to continue growing - as a professional, a colleague, and as part of a wider community. Growth is not a destination, but an ongoing journey of learning, adapting, and striving to leave a positive mark on the people and places around us.
In recent years, my motivation has become more purpose-driven. I am motivated by growth - not just my own, but the growth of those around me. Seeing colleagues develop, teams collaborate effectively, and people achieve their goals gives me a genuine sense of fulfilment. Watching others strive and succeed inspires me and strengthens my desire to continue becoming a better person.
What does International Men’s Day mean to you?
International Men's Day highlights the need to promote and raise awareness around men’s physical and mental health. It offers an opportunity to pause and reflect - not only on the roles men play in society, but also on the personal journeys, challenges, and aspirations that shape who we are.
For me, this day carries special meaning. As an immigrant from Africa who has lived and worked in Europe for over twenty years, my journey has been defined by growth, adaptation, and purpose. Early on, my focus was on building stability - establishing a career, integrating into a new culture, and finding my place in an environment very different from the one I grew up in. It was a period of perseverance and learning, where ambition centred on progress and building a solid foundation for the future.
I have been fortunate to work in environments where gender balance is valued, and where I have learned a great deal from female colleagues and leaders. Working alongside them has broadened my perspective on teamwork, communication, and leadership. It has encouraged me to be more intentional about creating space for others, ensuring every voice is heard and respected.
I cannot say I have been treated unfairly because I am a man - but I am aware that with certain privileges comes responsibility: a responsibility to advocate for equity, to challenge bias where it exists, and to model respectful, inclusive behaviour that enables everyone to thrive.
Outside of work, being shaped by different cultures has also influenced how I view masculinity. In some contexts, men are expected to always appear strong and composed. Over time, I have come to understand that vulnerability and authenticity are not weaknesses - they are foundations for meaningful connection and genuine growth.
This International Men’s Day, I celebrate all men who continue to evolve, lead with integrity, and inspire others through courage, resilience, and humanity.
