International Men's Day, November 19th, 2025

Shining a light on the men of NCI.

My name is Tim Lawless, and I am a Deputy Librarian at National College of Ireland. I have worked at the College for twenty-three years.

My path to NCI

I used to work in bookshops, but I decided to explore library work, which led me to complete a master’s degree at Aberystwyth University in Wales. Following my studies, I worked in the Dublin Dental Hospital Library, and after about a year in that role, I joined NCI as a Library Supervisor.

Aspirations and motivations

When I was younger, I wanted to become a tree surgeon, but the only college offering the programme was too far from my home - and I didn’t drive!

Today, my motivation comes from helping students succeed. While I may not be directly involved in teaching or assessment, ensuring that the library is open when students need it, and that resources such as books and databases are available and reliable, plays an important role in their academic success - and that is something I am proud to support.

What does International Men’s Day mean to you?

International Men’s Day doesn’t hold great personal significance for me. Globally, women’s rights remain in a more vulnerable position than men’s, and that continues to be an important reality to acknowledge. However, if this day provides support to men who are struggling or whose rights are being denied, then I fully support it.

I have never felt I was treated differently in my career because I am a man. I have worked in a predominantly female sector for many years and have never felt discriminated against or treated differently from my female colleagues. The ability to move through the world without experiencing gender-based treatment may itself reflect a privilege of being male.
